- Basics – The acronym TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas. This technique uses a tungsten electrode to create an electrical arc between the torch and the welding materials (both the metal pieces and the sacrificial rod used to join them). The heat of the electrical arc melts and fuses the metal workpieces together and can be used to join them into just about any configuration you want. TIG welding equipment also uses more gas to shield the arc area, protecting the weld pool and the tungsten tip.
- Applications – In general, TIG welding is used for projects involving thinner materials and ones that require greater precision.
